Nineteen Golf Clubs Represented at Rangatira Scramble

 RangatiraWinnersWeb07
Mark Harris of Robertson Holden, Tony Neilson, Nicola Martin, Tony Johnson and PGA Pro Sam Warner
They came from all of the neighbouring clubs for the Rangatira Golf Club Holden Scramble, but they couldn't stop a hot local threesome from taking out the event. Most winning scores have been in the low 60's but Tony Neilson, Tony Johnson and Nicola Martin went low with six birdies and the seemingly unavoidable bogey, a gross score of 67, less 7.83, netting out at 59.17. This was a comfortable margin in front of the second qualifying team from Taihape, who had to survive a back nine countback. Ron Sisson is a bit of a legend in this part of the country, and he lead his team of Alan Thomas and Hayden Tapp to a flying start, birdying their first three holes on their way to a 67, six birdies and that one bogey on their last hole. A handicap of 6.33 saw then net 60.67. Mark Harris from Robertson Holden from Palmerston North played the major sponsor role, with an on-course BBQ and some additional prizes. PGA Professional Sam Warner took care of the scoring and the prizes, and will now match up a couple of his fellow professionals top take the two teams on to the Regional Final at the Paraparaumu Beach Golf Club in early November. They have big shoes to fill, as it was a team from this event last year that won through at the next stage and went on to Australia, finishing up as the best New Zealand team in the Championship Final.

The Rangatira Golf Club is situated on Sate Highway One just north of Hunterville, and is a unique layout with six holes on each of three levels. You do finish up way down by the river but then you get to ride the cable car back to the clubhouse. If you are travelling through this part of the country anytime soon, do yourself a favour and take a break for a round, or if time does not allow at least call in and check out the stunning view form the clubhouse. The locals will always make you welcome.
