South Africa Strikes Back in Wairakei ScrambleSunday, Jul 15, 2007
 |
Roy Menton, Bryce Jessup, Dax Menton, and PGA Professional David Park | The South Africans struck back the day after the rugby test, with father and son team of Roy and Dax Menton, teamed up with Bryce Jessup, taking out the Wairakei Holden Scramble in perfect conditions. The Menton family are reasonably recent arrivals in New Zealand from South Africa, Dax works in the Wairakei pro shop alongside Bryce's son Steve, so it was all a bit "in-house", their score of 69 netting out at 62.17. They got to four under par reasonably early in their round, but three bogeys in a row from 12 through to 14 put the brakes on, however they made a couple more birdies late in the round for their winning score.
It was a very close event, with a number of teams within a couple of shots, and plenty of comment about the one that lipped out, but at the end of the day it's all about the putts that drop. The Wairakei team, headed up by PGA Professionals David Park and Steve Jessup, ensured that the day ran smoothly, the BBQ on the 11th tee being a popular spot, and the clubhouse hospitality appreciated by all. David now takes this winning team on to the Regional Final in late October. < Back
